BACKGROUND: The Access to Medicines, Vaccines and Pharmaceuticals (MVP) cluster works with countries and other partners to improve access to essential medicines and other health technologies of assured quality. The cluster collaborates with a wide range of international partners and expert networks, UN organizations and WHO Collaborating Centres and focuses on two broad areas of work: (1) the Regulation of medicines and other health technologies (medicines, vaccines, other biologicals, blood products, medical devices, and diagnostics); and (2) Innovation, Access and Use of medicines and other health products.
Purpose of the work: Support the work of MVP Cluster on communication and other related activities. Under the supervision of the Senior Communication Manager, the Advocacy and Communication consultant will assist in the development and dissemination of communication materials and in relations with key media.
Work to be performed:
- Revise non-technical content on the MVP web site to reflect new directions of WHO and the cluster and ensure that language, style and tone are consistent and of excellent quality throughout;
- Develop top stories and jointly with the web producer create and update other relevant communication content for the web site;
- In conjunction with the Senior Communication Manager and in consultation with relevant technical/managerial staff, develop compelling messages and advocacy materials;
- Contribute to the communication of important cluster activities, i.e. dissemination of publications, press materials and events;
- Contribute to the development of the AWaRe campaign;
- Contribute to the development of other materials such as brochures, quarterly newsletters and social media products;
- Monitor traditional and social media and identify opportunities for MVP to join debates;
- Assist in other communication tasks as required.

Key requirements for this assignment:
- Excellent writing skills in English and the ability to transform technical content into compelling text and stories;
- Experience in and good understanding of web and social media communication;
- Experience with advocacy and/or stakeholder management and partnership building;
- Ability to manage a project from beginning to end;
- Ability to work as part of a team in a multi- cultural environment.
Education: Essential: University degree in communication, social sciences (i.e. political science or international studies), humanities or related field. Desirable: Knowledge of the complexities – including political and economic - around access to medicines and health products.
Experience: Essential: Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in writing and communication-related activities or journalism, preferably in an international environment, with a strong analytical component and proven results.
Language requirement expert level of English with working knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French.
Additional information: The implementation of the assignment may require international travel; costs for such travel will be borne by WHO according to its rules and regulations. The contractor has to be legally entitled to work in the country or countries where the work is to be carried out, and is expected to be in the possession of an unrestricted passport.
